Harlech Poll - AM launches swimming pool survey

Regional Labour AM for Mid and West Wales, Joyce Watson, has launched a new survey to gauge local opinion on what the future should hold for Harlech’s endangered swimming pool.

Ms Watson, who has been working closely with campaigners fighting to save Harlech Swimming Pool over the past year, said that she hopes many local people will take part in the survey to ensure that the campaign can continue to press Gwynedd Council on the need to maintain suitable local swimming facilities.

“Friends of Harlech Swimming Pool have campaigned very hard to ensure that the pool stayed open over the wet summer months and they’ve let the Council know just what the pool means to them. The purpose of this survey is to find out what the pool means to all local residents.

“People can either fill out the survey online, by visiting my website, or they can pick up a copy at the poolside. We will then be able to present our findings to Gwynedd Council and to the Minister for Heritage."

The online poll includes questions about the suitability of alternative facilities, the need for extra investment, and how local residents have used the pool recently, or in the past.

Ms Watson also expressed concern about the provision of swimming lessons for primary schools and swimming clubs, in the event of closure.

“With the new school year starting, it is important that parents, pupils and teachers know what Gwynedd Council’s plans are for providing swimming lessons, if they continue with their current plans to close the pool early next year."
