No 'carnage' for Aberystwyth beach party

Labour urges organisers of Aberystwyth beach party to ensure resident and student safety.

Local Labour politicians are seeking urgent assurances from organisers of a Baywatch beach party at Aberystwyth next month that the safety and security of students and residents will be paramount, following the trial of one of their organisers for assaulting a local resident in North Wales.

Ryan Hilton of student pub crawl firm Carnage UK, is facing jail for assaulting a resident who voiced concerns about noise levels at one of their events in Bangor, North Wales. Carnage was branded a “disreputable organisation” by the Home Secretary in the House of Commons yesterday.

On Monday 26th April Carnage are holding a Baywatch beach party at Aberystwyth beach, which already has over 2,000 Facebook supporters.

Local AM Joyce Watson said: "I'm very concerned that a national organiser for this company could assault a resident, and I want to ensure that nothing like this happens in Aberystwyth. I know that the University works hard to get the balance right for our young people to have a good time during their time in Aberystwyth, and I want this to continue."

Labour's candidate for Ceredigion Richard Boudier, who is himself a local student, said: "Students add a huge amount to the vibrancy of Aberystwyth, but after this incident in Bangor I want assurances that this outside organisation's beach event will pass safely for all concerned. We don't want an event like this to affect the positive relationship which the University has with the town.

Richard, who will shortly become Deputy Mayor of Aberystwyth Town Council, added: "Aberystwyth students have a good reputation for working in partnership to respect the rights of local residents, and I hope we can carry on our good standards of policing and stewardship without this event impacting on it."

Joyce Watson AM added: "We will be taking this up with the organisers and with Aberystwyth Students Union to check that there has been proper consultation with the local Community Safety Partnership and other local groups."
