The Save Easy Credit Union has around 3,000 current members in the town and has enrolled some 4,500 members since it was established in 1999.
Joyce met General Manager, Jeff Hopkins, and other members at their Bridge Street premises to discuss the ways in which the financial co-operative can help Llanelli residents manage their money effectively. Joyce said:
“Credit unions are responsible and accessible providers of affordable savings and low-cost loans – a much better alternative to the high interest debts, doorstep lenders and illegal loan sharks that take advantage of borrowers. That’s why we need organisations like Save Easy here in Llanelli.”
Between 1999 and 2009, Save Easy handed out nearly £10 million in loans. It currently manages more than 15,000 loans, 85 per cent of which are under £2,000 and the average loan is around £600.
In January, the Assembly Government announced that credit union membership in Wales had risen above 50,000 for the first time – it is believed to be a response to the credit crunch.
