Carmarthenshire Children's Services department has been praised in the Assembly for its good work and its stable workforce.
Local Assembly Member Joyce Watson AM praised the department on the results of their childcare review. Minister Gwenda Thomas joined her in congratulating them on achieving such a strong result and said she had set up a workforce task group to help other authorities move away from long-term reliance on temporary contracts.
Cllr Pat Jones, Carmarthenshire's cabinet member for social services, welcomed the minister's comments on Children's Services. She said: "The wellbeing of our children is a key concern of ours, and I want to praise our staff who worked so hard to achieve these results. We want to build on these results to give our children the best start possible."
Speaking after the debate, Joyce Watson AM said:-
"Carmarthenshire County Council has had a very favourable report following the inspection of its Children’s Services. What came through in the report is just how crucial a stable workforce is – the Inspectorate reported that Carmarthenshire’s strength is the stability and resilience of the workforce and it found that there had been considerable success in retaining more experienced staff and management.
"I am delighted that the Minister joined me in praise of Carmarthenshire Council and agreed to encourage local authorities to move away from using so many temporary contracts, which are expensive and provide an inconsistent service.
"The report shows that social services for adults and children have improved in Wales, not just last year but over the course of the past decade – a reflection both of the success of devolution and of the commitment of successive Labour administrations to improving people’s lives.
"However, the report highlights inconsistencies in mid and west Wales and it’s important that we renew our commitment to improve services elsewhere."
