An Assembly Member has called on the Welsh dairy industry to ensure milk is processed locally.
Joyce Watson, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, raised the issue during a plenary debate at the Senedd, in Cardiff, today.
Following a question to the Minister for Rural Affairs she said: "When we talk about "local food" we must consider the whole process - from production, to processing, packaging and selling - that way "local food" can add real value to the local economy.
"In the dairy industry, the collapse of Dairy Farmers of Britain has brought into sharp focus the fact that the milk produced in Wales is mostly transported over the boarder to be processed in England, only to return to Welsh shops and branded as a local product."
Ms Watson added that the Welsh Assembly Government should continue to help promote local food through farmer and producer markets.
