Street Lighting in Powys

Powys Council have recently taken the decision to reduce the number of street lights in operation in Powys by 67% in order to make, according to the Council, efficiency savings. Street lighting will continue to be retained in a number of ‘core areas’, which include:

  • Traffic signal controlled pedestrian crossings and zebra crossing;
  • Street covered by public CCTV;
  • Areas where there is factual police evidence of anti social behaviour at night, and where the police have taken action to prevent such behaviour including the use of Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs);
  • Streets with traffic calming provisions (e.g. speed humps and some other physical measures);
  • Adjacent to hospitals, medical centres and surgeries with 24hour services;
    Sheltered housing;

Powys Council estimate that around 20% of lights fall within the definition of ‘core areas’.

In all other areas, (defined by Powys Council as non-core areas), 67% of lights will be switched off.

Lights that have been switched off have been marked with a sticker.

Any lights that residents believe should be working but are not should be reported to the helpdesk of Powys Council on 0845 607 60 60.
