A significant landmark in the construction of the new Welsh Assembly Government office in Aberystwyth has been reached with the completion of the main superstructure of the building.
To mark the occasion the First Minister, Rhodri Morgan performed a topping out ceremony of the new building. The new office, on track to open in the summer of 2009, will comprise of approximately 7,600 square metres of mainly open plan offices, and will accommodate up to 535 staff.
Rhodri Morgan said: “This is a significant milestone in delivering a long-awaited, significant Assembly Government presence in Mid Wales, concentrating much of our expertise in rural and agricultural development. Building work on the new office in Aberystwyth has progressed well since we signed the construction contract with our principal contractor, Carillion Construction Ltd, in September 2007.
The project’s construction workers can be proud of their achievements, particularly given the pressures of the tight timescale for delivering the building. I would like to thank all those involved: the architects, the project team, the contractors and all those who have been employed both on and off the site.”
