JOYCE WATSON, local Assembly Member, responded to the announcement, saying:
“This is deeply disappointing news for the workers and their families, and for the local community.
“Draka has said that it hopes some of the Llanelli staff could be transferred to its UK headquarters in Derby, but this will not be a realistic option for everyone. It is important that all the workers are given a real opportunity to find new employment.
“I’m encouraged that the Assembly Government has made a commitment to work with the company management and unions, over the coming months, to help the workers find suitable alternative employment in the area – or to give them a opportunities to retrain and acquire new skills.
“It will also be important for the Assembly Government to mitigate the longer-term impact of these job losses by continuing to invest in the region, by delivering support to local businesses and attracting new companies to the area”.
