Local AM welcomes investment in Carmarthenshire Schools

Labour Assembly Member for Carmarthenshire, JOYCE WATSON AM has welcomed investment in the County's schools.

Speaking to the Minister for Education, Children and Young People JANE HUTT during Assembly questions, Joyce highlighted Ysgol Y Bedol in Garnant and Bryn School in Llanelli as excellent examples of the investment that is helping to bring Carmarthenshire schools into the 21st Century.

JOYCE WATSON AM said:

“Ysgol y Bedol in Garnant, a new £5.5m super community-focused school, and Bryn School, Llanelli, which has spent £3.8m on modernizing the school and buying new equipment like whiteboards and plasma touch-screen televisions, are fantastic examples of what is being achieved in the County.

“This Labour-led government’s commitment to education has led to massive investment in the future of our schools, which was desperately needed after 18 years of neglect.

“This is the way forward for Carmarthenshire and for Wales.”

Local County Councillor Kevin Madge said:

“Since Ysgol y Bedol opened in 2006 it has made a huge difference to life in the local community. Only a few years ago we could only dream of the facilities that we now enjoy at the school.

“The main hall of the school hosts a wide range of activities six days a week including Netball, Footloose Dance, Senior & Junior football, Karate, Gym Ball, Badminton and Aikido.

“In addition, there are daytime and evening classes for adults along with a Senior Citizens’ Luncheon Club on Wednesday and a Police Surgery every Thursday morning.

“Labour is delivering in Carmarthenshire County Council, with Labour in the Welsh Assembly and Westminster delivering education for the communities of Carmarthenshire and the whole of Wales.”

In reply to Mrs Watson's question, Jane Hutt, Minister for Education, Children and Young People agreed that continued investment in schools would ensure that all pupils in Carmarthenshire would have access to a 21st century education.
