JOYCE WATSON AM WELCOMES BOOST FOR NURSES

JOYCE WATSON, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, has welcomed a drive to boost nurses’ career development, enabling them to work across traditional boundaries to improve patient care and achieve more senior positions in the NHS.

The ‘Beliefs and Actions’ statement for nurses, midwives and healthcare specialists also reaffirms the core principles and ethos of nursing in the year of the NHS’s 60th anniversary.

Mrs Watson said:

"This strategy has been written for nurses, by nurses, and it pledges that nurses will benefit from expanded and redesigned roles as more care is delivered outside hospital settings. It is important that nurses themselves have been at the core of the development of this statement.

"At the same time, it has at its core the patient’s right to respect, dignity, well-being, choice and compassion. Keeping the patient as the central focus in care is at the heart of the belief statement. It stresses the need to recognise that each patient has an individual set of needs and wishes that should be respected. I warmly welcome the development of this statement."

Each nurse in the NHS in Wales will receive a card outlining the new and improved ‘beliefs and actions’ mission statement. The publication of the new strategy comes ahead of the launch of a report to further empower ward sisters and charge nurses.
