First Minister Rhodri Morgan today pledged the Assembly Government’s full support to end the horrors of people trafficking, which sees thousands of women and children being trafficked every year, many ending up in the sex trade.
At an awareness raising event organised by Amnesty International at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, the First Minister said: “I believe it is our duty to do everything we can to bring this modern slave trade to an end. It is now more than 200 years since the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, yet the global trade in people still thrives. The work that Amnesty International and the Women’s Institute are doing is exemplary in combating this highly immoral problem.
The Welsh Assembly Government has already helped fund a safe house for women who have been sold into the sex trade, but the subject of tackling trafficking still remains an issue of focused attention within Assembly Government. Amnesty International estimate that there are around 150 women in Wales who have been sold into the sex trade, living in appalling conditions and suffering daily brutality. We must work together to stop it."
The event intends to highlight the collaboration of work between Amnesty International and the Women’s Institute to combat human trafficking, and raise awareness of their campaign to deliver better services for victims of trafficking. Research undertaken by Amnesty International suggests there are 60 victims of human trafficking at any given time in Cardiff. The problem is thought to not only exist in cities, but also extends to smaller communities across Wales.
Labour AM Joyce Watson, Chair of the All Party Group on the trafficking of Women and Children hosted the talk at the Senedd. The event also saw the handing over of a petition to the First Minister. The petition, which calls for improved services for trafficked victims in Wales, is in the form of a portrait representative of thousands of action postcards showing campaign support.
