JOYCE WATSON AM WELCOMES NEW PE STANDARD SEAL OF APPROVAL

Labour Assembly member for Mid and West Wales JOYCE WATSON AM is welcoming the news that Welsh schools achieving high standards in the provision of PE opportunities are now set to benefit from a prestigious stamp of approval thanks to an all new partnership between the Sports Council for Wales and the Association for Physical Education (afPE).

ActiveMarc Cymru is a new schools accreditation scheme designed to offer schools the chance to achieve recognition for commitment to developing high quality PE and school sport and for promoting the benefits of physical activity. The awards are open to primary and secondary schools, special schools and independent schools.

Schools that achieve the prestigious ActiveMarc Cymru status will receive a certificate and will be able to display the ActiveMarc Cymru logo on school documentation and websites for three years.

JOYCE WATSON said:

“In my work with the Assembly Communities and Culture committee I am particularly committed to ensuring that all our school children are able to access and participate in the best physical activity available to them, to give them a flying start. The health and well-being of young people in Wales is at the heart of a range of Welsh Assembly Government initiatives, including Health Challenge Wales.

“The ActiveMarc Cymru award is a symbol of the commitment that every Welsh school has to make sure that physical education has its rightful place in a balanced curriculum. Awards such as this provide a benchmark of excellence to which schools can aspire to the benefit of all their pupils.

“I hope that schools across Mid and West Wales will strive to achieve the ActiveMarc Cymru and that all the pupils will reap the benefits of high quality PE and sports provision.”
