Joyce Watson, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, has welcomed the level of investment made by the Welsh Assembly Government to protect communities from flooding. Speaking during First Minister’s Questions at the Assembly, Ms Watson said that the defences installed in Aberaeron and Tywyn will help to protect the towns from the dangers of flooding which could bring millions of pounds worth of damage to property, as well as cause misery for residents.

Tywyn’s promenade has recently been transformed after a multimillion pound investment in order to protect the seafront from high tides and floods. Sizeable rocks have been transported from Penmaenmawr Quarry in North Wales in order to break the waves as they approach the shore.

Aberaeron’s improved flood defence have been installed following a £5 million investment from the Welsh Assembly Government.

Ms Watson said, ‘Flooding can cause catastrophic damage to housing a local business in hardly any time at all but it can take years for a community to recover. There has been no shortage in recent years of examples of extreme weather and it is essential that people and their property are protected as much as possible from the elements. I am delighted that the Welsh Assembly Government have recognised the threat posed to Tywyn and Aberaeron and the significant investment will go a long way to protecting residents.’
