Two promising young female student plumbers will visit the National Assembly for Wales today 16th June.
JOYCE WATSON AM (Mid and West Wales) has invited both of them to share their experiences with JANE HUTT, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills.
AMIE GROVER is a student plumber from Pembrokeshire College and the winner of Joyce Watson AM's Second Chance Student bursary.
ROSE PHILIPS is a student plumber on day release to Coleg Sir Gar, Carmarthenshire.
The two students, their tutors and Rose's employer will have a tour of the Assembly, meet the minister and have lunch with Mrs Watson.
Mrs Watson met both young women recently, found them both inspirational and knew that the minister would want to meet them.
Amie Grover of Fishguard, who is training to be a plumber at Pembrokeshire College, was this year's winner of the annual Joyce Watson bursary for second chance students.
Mrs Watson met Rosemary Phillips during her visit to see the construction of Leonard Cheshire’s new Disability Care Home with Nursing in Johnstown, Carmarthen.
JOYCE WATSON AM said: "Both these young women are real role models. During difficult economic times they have risen to the challenge and I expect great things from them. I have no doubt that they will both share some great stories and experiences and it will be an opportunity for them to speak to another woman who aspires to become a plumber.”
Jane Hutt, Minister for Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, will meet both women at the Senedd and listen to their experiences.
Mrs Hutt said: “I wish Amie and Rosemary every success in their plumbing careers. These two young women have chosen rewarding careers, and I will be interested to hear how they are progressing.”
Rosemary Phillips is a plumbing student at Coleg Sir Gar, Ammanford campus and works for Dawnus Construction Ltd at Sainsbury Heating. She is now finishing her studies, and was her college’s Student of the Year last year.
Mother-of-three Amie Grover from Fishguard won Joyce Watson's 2009 £1,000 bursary to help her complete her Open College Network plumbing course at Pembrokeshire College.
Mid and West Wales AM Joyce Watson launched the bursary scheme in 2007 for students who have returned to learning to study at Pembrokeshire College this year.
The bursary, which Joyce self-funds, was open to anyone who had started a course at the college and was over 21. Joyce was inspired to fund the bursary by her own experience of learning at the college while bringing up a young family.
Single mum Amie, who has three boys under seven, left school at 16, with 11 GCSEs including five As, and worked at a supermarket before her children were born. Since then she has concentrated on bringing up her boys.
Amie decided on a plumbing career because she was practically-minded and good at DIY. She hopes that this career will make sure that her family are financially stable.
