Joyce welcomes Assembly cash injection for Glangwili Hospital

Local AM Joyce Watson today welcomed new Assembly money for Carmarthen Hospital and other West Wales hospitals.

West Wales General Hospital, Carmarthen, is to be transformed with new investment from the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government.

The accident and emergency unit and Branwen Suite at West Wales General Hospital will receive building improvements and new equipment as part of a £20.7million investment in hospitals across Wales.

Overall, the money allocated to Hywel Dda NHS Trust, which covers Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion, totals more than £2.6million. The money will go towards building improvements and new equipment for hospitals in West Wales.

Local Labour Assembly Member, Joyce Watson, welcomed the news:

“This is a solid commitment by our government to the health of Carmarthenshire people, and will help deliver improved patient care to patients in Carmarthen.

“This is just the latest investment in Carmarthenshire’s hospitals – at West Wales General Hospital the new £14million accident and emergency department and renal dialysis and cardiac centre has recently been completed, and Prince Phillip Hospital (Llanelli) is benefiting from almost £7million to expand the breast care centre.

"I am proud that investment in new buildings and equipment has trebled, while health investment and number of doctors and dentists has doubled since our Labour-led Assembly began. We are increasing training provision in key NHS posts such as midwifery, while in Wales we have the best recruitment of student nurses in the UK. Over this term we've invested more than £700 million, and we are well on our way to deliver our manifesto promise of investing over £1 billion to continue the modernisation of NHS buildings and infrastructure.

"Labour created the NHS 61 years ago in the teeth of Tory opposition and is now modernising it for the new challenges we face. Only Labour can be trusted to continue building our NHS into the future."
