Powys Council letting down local small businesses, says Joyce

Powys Council has been exposed as being the 2nd worst performing local authority in Wales for making payments within the 30 day target.

Powys Council pay only 77% of its undisputed bills within the 30 day target, against a Welsh average of 87%.

This failure was uncovered by Labour’s Assembly Rural Affairs spokesperson Joyce Watson AM, who revealed these Local Government Data Unit figures.

Local AM JOYCE WATSON, who is a member of the Assembly’s Finance Committee said:

“As someone who has run a range of small businesses across Mid Wales I know how crucial it was then to receive early payments, so in the current credit crunch it must be make or break.

“There is no excuse for a local authority to let down local small businesses, who are the backbone of this county.

“Powys Council preside over the 2nd worst performing local authority in Wales in terms of the amount of time it takes to their own bills – paying only 77% of bills on time within the previous 30 day target.

“They are being very unfair on the many small businesses across Powys and I will be looking to see improvements.”

The Labour-led Assembly Government have confirmed they are committed to paying bills within 15 days.
