Labour AMs Alun Davies and Joyce Watson have welcomed today’s announcement by Leighton Andrews, Labour’s Regeneration Minister, of new Strategic Regeneration Area for the Western Valleys including Ammanford and Ystradgynlais.
Alun Davies said: “I have been working closely with Labour representatives in Carmarthenshire and Powys to promote the Western Valleys as an area which needs special attention.
“We are delighted to welcome today’s announcement of the Labour-led Assembly Government’s intention to develop the Western Valleys area of south Wales as a Strategic Regeneration Area. In the years to come it will make a real difference to the lives of the people of the area and we will be working hard with business, with the public sector and with communities to build a brighter future for these important areas.”
Joyce Watson said: "As the minister outlined in Ystradgynlais today, a new focus will be given to regeneration for communities within a potential area stretching from the Amman Valley in the West across through the Neath valley extending north to the community of Ystradgynlais.
“I am reassured to know that partnership working will be a main component of this strategic plan. We have learned from the Heads of the Valleys that by bringing on board a range of organisations the benefits of investment and skills can create wonderful new opportunities."
Carmarthenshire’s Labour Leader, Cllr Kevin Madge said: “Labour’s strategic response in the Western Valleys will create greater collaboration between organisations such as the Department for Work and Pensions, Local Authorities and the Communities First Partnerships.”
“I look forward to Carmarthenshire, Powys and Neath Port Talbot Councils working together to share experiences to create new solutions to regenerating our mining valleys.”
Included in Labour’s strategic response in the Western Valleys will be collaboration with the Department of Work and Pensions to extend programmes to help people back into work.
The plans will also involve the integration of the current cross-border Communities First partnership between Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire.
