The announcement was made on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Tuesday 25 November). The Minister for Social Justice and Local Government, Dr. Brian Gibbons, announced £1.5m extra funding for the Domestic Abuse Grant Scheme, which provides capital funding to support organisations that offer advice and support to victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
Joyce Watson said:
“I’ve always worked closely with Llanelli Women’s Aid, so I was delighted to hear that they will benefit from the extra funding. They provide a vital service which protects women and children from abuse and gives a safe haven to victims of domestic abuse.
“This week I’ve been raising money for Llanelli Women’s Aid by selling white ribbons in the Welsh Assembly. The money raised will be used to help the women and children who urgently need assistance in the Llanelli area.
“The White Ribbon campaign is aimed at getting men, in particular, to stand up against domestic abuse. Wearing a white ribbon is symbolic of a promise to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.”
Vicky Pedicini, project coordinator of Llanelli Women’s Aid said:
“The grant that we have been awarded from the Welsh Assembly Government will enable Llanelli Women’s Aid to provide a more comprehensive and diversified service which will enhance the lives of women and children who are experiencing domestic abuse in our community.
“Our aim with this grant is to set up a ‘One-Stop Shop which will have an information centre, a training room for the Freedom Programme, and confidence building classes. In addition to this we will house other organisations to bring services to the women rather than them wandering around trying to access help.
“We also want to transform the front of the premises into internet café as a place where the women we support can gain work experience and build their self-confidence.”
Dr Brian Gibbons said:
“Domestic and sexual abuse can have devastating effects on victims. It is very important that Wales takes action to minimise domestic abuse through dedicated support centres.
“We also need to be aware that as we approach the festive season, sadly the risk of domestic violence increases. It is vital that we work to prevent this crime as well as having services in place to respond.
“I am very pleased to announce capital funding from the Domestic Abuse Grant Scheme for the year 2008/09. This will ensure that domestic abuse organisations across Wales can grow and continue to improve the assistance and provide support to people affected by domestic and sexual abuse.”
