At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them

This year I was particularly moved by the remembrance events to commemorate the 90 years since the end of the First World War, then called the Great War.

On Sunday I attended moving services in Carmarthen and Cardigan. Despite horrendous weather people gathered to pay tribute to those who laid down their lives for our freedom.

In the Senedd Assembly Members, staff and guests gathered for the two minute silence.

My own father was a prisoner of war for five years in Stalag 22, one of the infamous prisoner of war camps, during the Second World War. He was brought up speaking only Welsh, so it was in Stalag 22 that he became fluent in English, along with learning several other languages. He was one of the lucky ones who made it home.

When we think of our troubles today, spare a thought for those who went out into the world to serve their countries, and for those who waited at home and hoped for their return.
