Plans for rural housing enablers unveiled

The locations of six new “enablers” to develop affordable housing in rural Wales have been revealed today.

£400,000 will be available for the Rural Housing Development scheme this year. The Welsh Assembly Government will provide £200,000 and the WLGA and CHC will provide match funding of £200,000. The Welsh Assembly Government’s Rural Housing Development Scheme will provide funding to expand an already successful set of pilot “Rural Enabler” posts into a comprehensive resource across Wales.

Six new “Rural Enabler” posts will be established in the following areas:
  • Ceredigion
  • Carmarthenshire
  • Rural Wrexham and Flintshire
  • North Powys
  • Mid Powys
  • Ynys Mon

This development follows successful pilots in Gwynedd and parts of Monmouthshire and Powys. The Network will now be extended to cover all of rural Wales including rural areas of otherwise predominantly urban authorities such as the Ceiriog Valley in Wrexham County Borough.

Earlier this month the Welsh Assembly Government announced a consultation on a number of proposals for amending planning policy relating to rural housing. The proposals offer new ways to boost the availability of more affordable housing for local people working and living in the countryside.
