Digital Switchover - Carmarthenshire is at the forefront of the preparations for the switchover to digital television in 2009

All council tenants served by a communal aerial will be able to receive digital television when analogue switches over to digital in 12 months time.

The county council was singled out for praise at the West Wales announcement of the date for the start of the digital switchover
in August 2009.

The local authority became the first in West Wales to be presented with the Get Set for Digital Accreditation Award for its successful efforts to ensure that its tenants will be able to receive digital television when analogue television is switched off.

Digital UK, the independent body leading the process, announced that West Wales will be the first area to switch to digital.

The award was presented to the council’s health assessment officer Leighton Evans, who handled the technical task of preparing estates for the switchover and principal project officer Rachel Davies, who was responsible for co-ordinating the work, by Mid and West Wales AM Joyce Watson.

Head of housing Robin Staines said: “We are very pleased to receive the accreditation which reflects our hard work in helping get the county ready for the digital switchover.

“We have been preparing the county council’s housing stock for a number of years, but we are also providing advice to all the community. Anyone can contact us or Digital UK for details of the switchover.”

The council’s executive board member for regeneration Cllr Clive Scourfield said: “Once again Carmarthenshire County Council is at the forefront as an authority.

“It is extremely important that when the switchover comes next year, people in Carmarthenshire can be assured that they will continue to receive a television signal.”

Digital Television Switchover is the process of converting the UK’s terrestrial television system to digital.

Between now and 2012, analogue channels will be switched off region by region and replaced with free-to-air digital TV and radio services (Freeview). Switchover will extend Freeview coverage to the whole of the UK and free up airwaves for new services such as ultra-fast wireless broadband and mobile television.
