Major investment to boost palliative care

Minister for Health, Edwina Hart, today announced funding to the tune of £8 million over the next three years to further improve palliative care across Wales at the Senedd.

This major new investment – which is a One Wales Commitment - will see £1m being allocated to palliative care across Wales in 2008-09, increasing to £2m in 2009-10 and then £5m in 2010-11.

It is anticipated that the new funding will be invested in both NHS and voluntary sector providers of palliative care, depending on where the service gaps exist. Advice on where investment should be prioritised will come from Baroness Finlay’s Implementation Group that has been established to put into action a number of recommendations suggested in the Palliative Care Planning Group Report.

The Report, which was officially launched earlier today, covers both adult and children’s palliative care in Wales and makes a number of recommendations to improve the current service. It is anticipated that Baroness Finlay will establish working sub groups to focus on specific issues including clinical data requirements, service planning specifications and a model service level agreement. Service level agreements (SLAs) will be established by 01st April, 2009, in order to provide clarity and confirm what palliative care services are appropriate for the NHS to fund and what should be funded by voluntary hospices.
