JOYCE WATSON AM WELCOMES UN SECURITY COUNCIL DECISION ON 'WEAPON OF WAR'

JOYCE WATSON AM welcomed the UN Security Council's unanimous vote in favour of a resolution classifying rape as a weapon of war.

The resolution describes sexual violence as: "a tactic of war to humiliate, dominate, instil fear in, disperse and/or forcibly relocate civilian members of a community or ethnic group."

Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales Mrs Watson said: "I welcome the news that the UN Security Council has taken this historic step.

"I spoke about this matter in Cardigan recently. It is a terrible fact that rape is occurring on a massive scale in war-torn countries. It is used as an instrument of terror to punish and to instil fear.

"It is a positive development that the UN Security Council has set up an inquiry to report on just how widespread the problem is, and to explore ways in which to tackle it."
