The inspirational story of Tower Colliery was celebrated by the Welsh Assembly Government last night.
First Minister Rhodri Morgan hosted a reception for more than 250 Tower miners at the Senedd.
The First Minister said: "It’s our way to say ‘thank you’ to everyone at Tower Colliery, whose success in running their own coal mine has proved to be a real inspiration to all the people of Wales. Their determination to save their own jobs and to save their own valley showed everyone in Wales that we have the confidence, the ability and the determination to build a successful future. US Presidential candidate Barack Obama is travelling around the 50 states right now getting crowds to chant ‘yes we can!’ The Tower colliers said ‘yes we can’ and proved as good as their word over a decade ago."
