Joyce stands up for Carmarthenshire farm workers

The Welsh farming and food industry has a bright future but workers must not be left behind, said Welsh Labour spokesperson for rural Affairs, Joyce Watson, today.

At the launch of a consultation on the long-term future of the farming and food industry in Wales, the Assembly Member for Carmarthenshire said the growing demand for quality Welsh produce was great news for the farming and food industry but warned that farm workers’ pay and conditions must not be ignored.

The consultation has been launched following last year's publication of the 2020 Report and it highlights the opportunities and challenges facing the farming and food industries in Wales.

The expansive strategy outlines the role food supply has to play in achieving a profitable future for farming and the food industry, sustaining the natural environment, mitigating the effects of climate change and securing the futures of our rural communities in Wales.

JOYCE WATSON AM said:

“There are many great examples of companies and producers making the most of a strong Welsh brand. Local food processing is not only important from a food security and branding perspective; it also provides valuable jobs throughout Wales at plants like Dunbia in Llanybydder.

"It is important that representatives from these plants make their voices heard over the next 12 weeks to ensure that issues like health and safety, pay and rights at work are placed at the centre of our long-term vision of the food and farming industries in Wales."
