Gwynedd Assembly Member JOYCE WATSON AM raised the issue of the threatened Harlech Pool with First Minister Rhodri Morgan in the Assembly today.
She told him of her recent meeting to discuss the future of Harlech swimming pool, where many residents are deeply concerned for the future of this facility.
First Minister Rhodri Morgan agreed that there was little point in the Welsh Assembly government funding its free swimming initiative for under-16s and over 60s if there was no pool to swim in, and hoped that alternative provision would be made.
Joyce Watson is meeting local campaigners again this Friday 1st February to discuss how best to protect this local facility. Joyce has backed local campaigners, writing and lobbying on their behalf.
Today Gwynedd Council decided to extend their proposed closure date for Harlech swimming pool to April 2009, with a pledge to try and find a private sector solution.
Joyce Watson said: “Harlech Pool is very important and I pay tribute to the efforts of those who have fought to keep it open.
“Swimming is an excellent way for older people to stay healthy and I believe that a pool in Harlech is vital for the health of the local population and the economy of the area.”
“Harlech Swimming Pool is also a tourist attraction, with visitors having a swim as well as walking around the town and the castle. Harlech needs facilities which make people stop in the town and not drive straight through.
“Also, the pool is used during the Harlech Triathlon. This attracts over 400 competitors from all over the country and some from overseas. Many athletes stay locally, boosting the economy, and the closure of the pool could finish this.
“I look forward to my meeting with councillors and campaigners on Friday, and I am committed to getting the best deal for the people of Harlech.”
